Not as chaotic as our previous bus chaos incident, but still an unfortunate chain of events.
We set our scene, Zagreb station, arriving fashionably early. Seat reservations booked for a train direct to our next destination.
After finding the track for our train, albeit with some confusing directions, we arrive to a train with an entirely different destination signed on the side.
A brief question to an inundated conductor and we’re quickly informed to get on and that we’ll need to change trains.
Consulting a slew of vague timetables we work out the last stop in common of our new vehicle and the promised itinerary, and make our assumptions on what stop we need to disembark.
After a smoky, and noisy, ride (thanks to some, interesting carriage-mates, see above), we disembark at the station and follow a stream of people with similar ideas.
Towards a set of two, unmarked, busses.
The driver of one bus is similarly inundated, and when asked “is this..” promptly responds “yes”, and moves to the next person.
Not thoroughly convinced, but without options, we stow our bags and board for destinations unknown, unsure when, if ever, we’ll arrive.
After a long winding path through the Croatian countryside and into a remote train station, it is abruptly time to disembark and walk across tracks to a small 2 carriage train waiting.
At this point, our tickets are checked for the first time.
After some time on this train, we arrive at another small and remote station, and are once again advised to pack up, disembark, and move to a different train.
Several hours later we arrive, relieved and delayed, at our destination.
